Community:
I chose to work with the community of bus
travellers in London
Case study: Bus
No. 52 from Victoria to Willesden
Need: How would
a communication channel faciliate the desire
to talk to other people on the bus
without revealing one's identity?
Themes Explored:
1. Everyday urban travel
is getting increasingly monotonous, boring and exhausting. How
can these journeys become amusing
and enjoyable?
2. What are the relationships
between the transient populations
of everyday journeys?
3. How curious are we to
know more about people whom we travel with everyday, people we see and
sometimes acknowledge, yet do not interact with?
4. Mobile phones, ipods and walkmans take us into new digital spaces,
disconnecting us from the close physical proximity of fellow travellers.
But could there be a reversal? Or an alternative path? Could one leap
into other people’s digital spaces, maybe as a voyeur,
an eavesdropper, even a snooper?
5. Would this entry into the digital spaces of strangers
develop relationships, or would people prefer to remain
anonymous and happy with passing
encounters?
